Arthroscopic lateral
clavicle excision

Arthroscopic lateral clavicle excision is used to treat a painful acromioclavicular joint.

This is done under general anaesthesia using small incisions and motorized shavers to remove the damage bone at the end of the clavicle.

The shoulder joint will continue to function normally if the excised bone lies within he supporting ligaments (which it does). Any other shoulder problems can be addressed at the same time

Following an arthroscopic distal clavicle excision, you will have dressings over the small arthroscopic surgical incisions. These remain for 10-14 days after surgery. Drains are not used. Antibiotics may be given in the immediate post-surgical period. Dressings are kept clean and dry. If removable sutures are used they will remain for 10-14 days after surgery. Dissolvable sutures do not need to be removed.

The arm may be kept in a sling or brace. This is worn predominantly for comfort but it also helps support the remaining acromio-clavicular joint capsule. You are allowed to take this off in a safe environment and do simple exercises as per your doctor and physiotherapist.

Pain is usually well controlled and medication to control pain is taken as needed.

Rehabilitation is carried out under the supervision of your doctor and physiotherapist. In general, you protect the acromio-clavicular joint by avoiding specific movements such as lifting or carrying and progress over the course of your rehabilitation to regain normal range and then strength in the shoulder.

Complications are rare and most patients have good outcomes from surgery. Tenderness over the lateral clavicle will persist for several months.

A significant amount of individuals will however develop a stiff and sore shoulder following any surgery on the shoulder even from something as straight forward as lateral clavicle excision. (frozen shoulder) This will resolve over several months with no long term problems.
